THE UP-N-SMOKE ENGINE PROJECT by Daniel Peirce
As my post to Luciana stated, I’ve been a commercial photographer for almost 30 years and this is my first art project. It is a photographic examination of the motorcycle engine as art. The project has been received very well in the motorcycling community, but I want to find out how the project will be perceived in the general art community. Unfortunately I’m completely ignorant of the DFW art scene and I know nobody in the art community.
I’m looking for a non-motorcycling venue that would like to host an exhibit of 30 prints from the project. I’m not looking from money, or print sales, or even having an event of any kind. I just want to present it as an art exhibit and see what people think of it. If you know anyone who would like to host this with me please send him or her this web page.
Highlights of the project- The project was two and a half years in the making. It contains 66 pictures of motorcycle engines presented with all the drama of fine portraiture. By tradition the motorcycle is a naked beast. It differs from other vehicles by the fact that the engine is also part of the aesthetic structure. The people who designed the motors had to make them perform well, and look good doing it.
The project will be the subject of an upcoming book, “The Fine Art of the Motorcycle Engine, the Story of the Up-N-Smoke Engine Project,” due for release from Veloce Publishing, UK, in September 2008. Metallic prints from the project sell all over the world including the EU, Australia, Japan and exotic places like Brazil and Canada. Even Jay Leno has a print from the project hanging in his garage. Cycle World magazine called it pornography for Gearheads.
The exhibit debuted last October at the Barber Vintage Festival held at the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum in Birmingham, Alabama. The exhibit was hosted and sponsored by Motorcycle Classics Magazine. The exhibit has 25-16x20 and 5-24x30 metallic prints in simple satin black frames. I also have eight freestanding 2’x7’ black grid-wall stands to display them on.
